In the current epidemic season, Ukraine may face a twin epidemic (simultaneous epidemics) of COVID-19 and influenza, predicts the head of the National Technical Group of Experts on Immunoprophylaxis (NTGEI) Fedir Lapii.
“There are reasons to believe that the flu will return to us this season, and we will face a so-called twin epidemic, that is, simultaneous epidemics of COVID-19 and flu,” Lapii said in an interview with the agency.
The head of the NTGEI explained that the fact that the flu was contained earlier due to the quarantine measures that were in place in Ukraine before the military invasion of the Russian Federation to fight the COVID-19 pandemic may be a prerequisite for the twin epidemic.
“In the past two years, the measures that were implemented to prevent COVID-19: masks, quarantine measures, distance learning, etc., contained the flu very well. Therefore, in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons, we actually did not have the flu. However , it cannot continue like this for a long time, because sooner or later we will still return to our usual life, to communication, to school. The flu virus has not disappeared, we actually “walked” through two flu seasons, so it is obvious that a non-immune layer has accumulated, which will contribute his epidemic. And now the twin epidemic scenario can be realized,” he said.
Lapiy noted that if a person suffers from these two diseases at the same time, it significantly worsens the prognosis, and the risk of death doubles.
