In just two seasons, Doja Cat has established herself as a pillar of Parisian fashion. Back in October the pop star invited herself to Paris Fashion Week for the first time and left its mark of gold, paint your whole body (multiple times), going through the archives and fully embracing each designer’s aesthetic for their respective show. It’s hard to imagine how the singer could have topped outrageous looks week, but when Doja arrived in Paris ahead of couture week, she was ready and eager to give it a try. So far, Doja has shown off three looks — a full makeover, a throwback bang to the reviews, and a delicious palette cleanser — proving that lighting can, in fact, strike twice.
By now you’ve seen Doja’s look from the Schiaparelli show on Monday because it was almost impossible to miss it. The singer sat in the front row, looking like a work of art, an incandescent sculpture, the human incarnation of Dante. Hell. Doja wore a red dress with a beaded skirt, similar to the one that would later walk the runway during Daniel Roseberry’s presentation. And while the dress was gorgeous, it was the makeup that took the look to the next level. With the help of Pat McGrath, Doja ended up completely red, with her chest, arms and head covered in Swarovski crystals. The look took nearly five hours to complete and featured 30,000 hand-applied crystals. “The end product was a magical and mesmerizing masterpiece of sparkling brilliance”, McGrath wrote of the result.
Of course, the internet had a lot to say about this unique set, and there were a lot of memes. It seems the only thing that stayed with Doja, however, was one person on Twitter who insisted the look needed a boost, as Doja appears to have barely any eyelashes in the photos from the show. “If lashes are what you all want then lashes are what you will get,” Doja replied on her Instagram Story on Wednesday morning. “See you at Viktor and Rolf’s,” she added with the emoji of a face with a fake mustache and eyebrow disguise.
And when Doja arrived at the Viktor and Rolf show, it became clear why she chose this emoji for her message. The singer wore a look from the brand’s Fall 2022 collection, a brown pinstripe suit with a comically proportioned jacket over a green and white ruched top. The look was interesting, but quite tame compared to what Doja has presented in the past. It was his face, however, that made things really interesting. The singer has backed out of any major makeup statements except for the eyelashes, although she didn’t place them on her eyelids, but instead of her eyebrows, on her upper lip like a mustache, and on her chin to mimic a tiny soul spot. Doja whipped you, as you requested, and as she said, and in doing so, she turned into an emoji.
But Doja wasn’t finished yet. Shortly after Viktor & Rolf, it was time to head to the Jean-Paul Gaultier show, presented by Haider Ackermann. At this point, it looks like Doja felt she had provided enough meme food for now and went for one of her most tame looks in a while. The singer wore a purple leather belted midi dress with slightly exaggerated hips. Of course, she had to stand out somehow, and she did it munching on grapes while taking pictures on the walk and rehearsing.
It’s possible the singer always planned to embody emojis throughout Couture Week, starting with a red heart, going through the man with the mustache, and ending with a bunch of grapes. Or, it was just a happy accident, made possible by Doja’s creativity and Apple’s impressive array of emoji offerings. Either way, we can count this as another successful fashion week for Doja in the books. See you next month to start all over again.
